What originally drew you to the field of spine care?
My attraction to spine care grew from its unique combination of biomechanics, meticulous surgical craftsmanship, and the potential to restore meaningful function for patients. The field demands rigorous problem-solving and collaboration across specialties, yet delivers clear, transformative outcomes—from pain relief and mobility improvement to restored independence. The continuously evolving technologies and approaches—minimally invasive techniques, robotics, imaging advances—provide ongoing opportunities to refine care and extend patients' lives and livelihoods.
What initially inspired you to become involved with NASS, and what has kept you engaged over the years?
My initial motivation to engage with NASS stemmed from a mentor who highlighted the power of multidisciplinary collaboration and the collective pursuit of excellence in spine care. Over the years, I have remained engaged because NASS provides a rigorous platform for education, research, and guideline development that directly advances patient outcomes. The ability to work with colleagues across specialties, contribute to high-impact projects, and mentor the next generation has been both professionally rewarding and mission-driven.
What skills do you believe are most important for today's spine professionals to develop?
Today’s spine professionals should cultivate a foundation of advanced clinical judgment and technical expertise, paired with exceptional communication and multidisciplinary teamwork. Critical competencies also include data literacy, outcomes analysis, and a rigorous commitment to evidence-based practice and quality improvement. As technologies evolve, adaptability and lifelong learning are essential. Leadership, mentorship, and a strong ethical orientation toward patient safety and shared decision-making round out the skill set needed to drive progress in the field.
