What initially inspired you to become involved with NASS, and what has kept you engaged over the years?

Professional Ethics and Standard of Care require ongoing dedication and commitment. NASS stands for that. Being engaged with likeminded colleagues who are interested in developing, preserving, and honoring clinical and professional excellence is something that keeps me engaged year in and year out. If we commit to a higher standard and hold each other accountable to it, then our patients can continue to have faith in the system.

What is a lesson you learned early in your career that you still carry with you today?

Outcomes from a procedure are never guaranteed. Keep yourself humble and honest on every single case, and remember there are powers beyond the life sciences that are part of the patient’s journey and recovery. We as technical instruments and diagnosticians have to be compassionate and comfortable enough to look someone in the eyes and say sorry the outcomes were less than expected and we are here to help with a path forward. Intellect honesty is not an admission of guilt.

Tell us about one of your mentors and the best piece of advice they gave you.

Dr. Furman and Dr. Gilhool from OSS Health are my spine gurus. They set the standard for procedural and professional excellence and paved the way for my future success back in fellowship. Going into private practice doesn’t mean your educational journey ends. Continuing the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence while contributing to science and research is achievable. They set the model for “privademics” and holding each fellow accountable to the standards they set.
