What is a lesson you learned early in your career that you still carry with you today?
Early in my career, I learned a fundamental truth: never fall so deeply in love with a technical solution that you lose sight of the actual clinical problem. It is easy to get captivated by a brilliant piece of engineering or a novel mechanism, but if it doesn't seamlessly integrate into the high-stakes, real-world environment of the operating room or directly improve patient compliance, it won't succeed.
Ultimately, this requires a commitment to systems-level thinking—understanding how every single decision impacts the process both upstream and downstream. To be truly effective, you have to understand the complete ecosystem: from the initial clinical problem and the engineering solution, to FDA regulatory pathways, insurance reimbursement, and business strategy. You even have to anticipate how the scrub tech, not just the operating surgeon, will interact with the technology in the operating room. I carry this with me today: if you take the time to understand all aspects of the environment your work lives in, you will always be able to find a solution to any challenge that arises.
How has your involvement with NASS influenced your professional growth or career journey?
I am fast approaching the two-decade mark of my journey with NASS, and I am continually reminded of how foundational this community has been to my professional growth. Whether serving as a committee member for current and past technology sections, acting as an ‘Elite’ reviewer, moderating, or simply sitting in the audience, every experience has been a masterclass. NASS has provided a platform to stand alongside remarkable overachievers, reinforcing that this network is truly there when needed.
Over these many years, actively participating in the field's evolution—from a heavy focus on traditional surgical interventions to the current expansion into motion preservation, robotics, and spinal stimulation—has allowed me to sharpen my clinical and engineering skills while developing a comprehensive understanding of the spine care ecosystem. Ultimately, it has honed my ability to view novel technologies and innovation through a holistic lens, ensuring that cutting-edge research is effectively and safely translated into scalable clinical solutions that elevate patient care.
What skills do you believe are most important for today's spine professionals to develop?
As spine care rapidly expands beyond traditional structural interventions into robotics, neuromodulation, and artificial intelligence, the most important skill to develop is technological fluency—the ability to be 'multilingual' across disciplines. Today's spine professionals need to be comfortable speaking the language of engineering and data science just as well as they speak clinical anatomy. You don’t need to be a software developer, but you must understand how data is collected, how algorithms process it, and how to critically evaluate whether a new enabling technology actually improves patient outcomes or simply adds complexity.
Simultaneously, we must balance this technological depth with clinical breadth. With the rapid advancement of new technologies and highly focused fellowships, there is a strong pull for spine professionals to hyper-specialize—mastering one specific niche while sometimes losing sight of the broader spectrum of spine disease. I believe it is vital to have the discipline to resist getting siloed. The spectrum of care is vast, ranging from conservative pain management and injections to micro-surgery, robotics, fusion, and motion preservation. As the landscape evolves—with hospital systems integrating robotics, and patients arriving armed with information from 'AI doctors'—we must maintain a broad, generalized awareness of the entire field. Every patient is unique, and understanding their specific functional goals is just as important as addressing their primary complaint. The critical skill is not just mastering a single technique, but maintaining the comprehensive awareness necessary to pull from the entire continuum of care to provide the exact right solution when it is needed.
