How has your involvement with NASS influenced your professional growth or career journey?

My journey in interventional spine and pain management has been fundamentally shaped by the collaborative environment fostered by NASS. Navigating the complexities of appropriate coding and cross-pollination with other specialists on multiple projects. Ultimately, my involvement has taught me the value of playing the "infinite game" in medicine—where the objective is not just to practice, but to continuously elevate the standard of care and advocate for our patients' access to innovative therapies.

What skills do you believe are most important for today's spine professionals to develop?

Beyond achieving clinical and procedural excellence, today's spine professionals must cultivate a strong foundation in practice management and health policy advocacy. The healthcare landscape is constantly shifting; therefore, understanding the nuances of reimbursement, regulatory affairs, and clinical operations is just as critical as mastering a new interventional technique. Embracing modern operational workflows, including the judicious use of advanced AI and workspace automation, can significantly streamline administrative burdens, allowing us to keep our primary focus on patient care. Furthermore, developing a resilient leadership style is essential to effectively manage clinical teams and navigate the socioeconomic challenges of modern medicine while pushing our specialty forward.

What originally drew you to the field of spine care?

I was drawn to spine care by the profound impact interventional treatments can have on restoring a patient's quality of life. The central nervous system is beautifully complex, and I saw a unique opportunity to blend cutting-edge medical technologies with compassionate, patient-centered care. Leading a dedicated neuroscience institute has allowed me to fully realize this vision, creating a clinical environment where we can offer comprehensive solutions for complex pain. For me, finding my "why" in medicine meant choosing a field where the rapid evolution of technology—like peripheral nerve stimulation and specialized intrathecal therapies—directly translates to giving patients their lives and functionality back.
