One of the most pivotal experiences in my career was serving as a neurosurgeon in the military during Operation Enduring Freedom. Caring for service members with complex combat-related injuries reinforced the importance of decisive leadership, teamwork, and innovation under pressure. Those experiences shaped my approach to patient care and strengthened my commitment to continually advancing surgical techniques that improve outcomes while minimizing recovery time and patient burden.

In addition to strong clinical and technical skills, today's spine professionals must develop adaptability, collaboration, and lifelong learning. The pace of innovation in spine care continues to accelerate, and physicians must be willing to evaluate new technologies and techniques critically while remaining focused on evidence-based medicine. Equally important is the ability to communicate effectively with patients and multidisciplinary teams. The best outcomes are achieved when expertise, empathy, and teamwork come together in service of the patient.

I was initially drawn to NASS because it brought together specialists from diverse backgrounds who shared a common goal of advancing spine care. As a young spine surgeon, I valued the opportunity to learn from leaders in the field and to collaborate with colleagues who were pushing the boundaries of innovation and patient care. What has kept me engaged over the years is NASS's commitment to education, research, and advocacy. The organization continually fosters meaningful collaboration and provides a platform where ideas can evolve into practices that improve outcomes for patients worldwide.
