What accomplishment are you most proud of, and why?

I am most proud of the number of students that choose to shadow me. Every summer I have three or four college or medical students spend time with me in clinic and the operating room. These students have heard about the shadowing experience from other students, family members, or colleagues. I am honored that they choose to learn more about clinical practice from me and hope to inspire the next generation of spine surgeons.

What initially inspired you to become involved with NASS, and what has kept you engaged over the years?

My fellowship director, Dr. Jeffrey Wang, inspired me to get involved with NASS. During my training I saw firsthand how valuable participating in the society is for both personal and professional growth. Staying engaged with NASS makes me a better clinician and surgeon, and keeps me at the forefront of spine care.

If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of career advice, what would it be?

“To thine own self be true.” Act 1, Scene 3 of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Early in my career there were individuals that tried to dissuade me from utilizing all my talents and ideas to grow and market my practice. I thought if I obliged and dimmed my light, I would fit in at that practice. Long story short, I did not. Later, I found my current practice that has encouraged me to let my light shine and pursue my ideas to help to practice grow. I would advise my younger self to always be true to yourself, never dim your light, and find spaces that support you in doing so.
